Analysis of Caries Experience and Quality of Life in Diabetes Mellitus Patients

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that can affect systemic and oral health. Uncontrolled hyperglycemia can increase the risk of dental caries through changes in saliva composition, decreased salivary flow, and increased growth of cariogenic bacteria. This study aims to analyze the relationship between caries experience and quality of life in patients with diabetes mellitus. The study used an observational analytical design with a cross-sectional approach. The population in this study were all patients with diabetes mellitus treated at Iskandar Muda Class II Hospital, Aceh. The sample size was calculated using an infinite formula, totaling 67 respondents, and sampling was determined by accidental sampling technique. Caries experience was measured through a clinical examination using the DMF-T index, while quality of life was measured using the OHIP-14 questionnaire. Data analysis was performed univariately to describe the characteristics of respondents and bivariately using the Spearman correlation test with a significance level of p<0.05. The results showed that most patients with diabetes mellitus had to high caries experience (62.7%) and the majority of respondents also experienced a decline in quality of life (70.1%), especially in the dimensions of physical pain, psychological discomfort, and limitations in oral function. Statistical analysis showed a significant relationship between caries experience and the quality of life of diabetes mellitus sufferers (p<0.05), where the higher the DMF-T score, the lower the respondent's quality of life.Downloads
