Abstract

The oral cavity of pregnant women is prone to inflammation due to hormonal changes, causing the gingiva to become sensitive if oral health is not maintained properly. This study aims to determine the identification of the oral health of pregnant women in the first trimester at the Health Center Oesapa Kupang City. The design of this research is descriptive research with cross sectional design. The sampling technique was purposive sampling, as many as 31 pregnant women with inclusion criteria: First trimester pregnant women and willing to be respondents. Exclusion criteria: Patient refused for examination. The independent research variables were education level and socioeconomic status, while the dependent variable was the identification of the oral health of pregnant women in the first trimester (gingival status). Data was collected by interview and clinical examination of the oral cavity of pregnant women in the first trimester at the KIA Poly Health Center Oesapa Kupang City. Data analysis using Spearmen correlation test. The results of the Spearmen correlation test showed that there was a significant relationship between education level and gingival status p=0.034 (p<0.05), correlation coefficient 0.332 (positive) meaning that the higher the level of education, the lighter the inflammation or the lower the education the more severe the inflammation. There was no significant correlation between socioeconomic status and gingival status (p>0.05). Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between education level and gingival status as well as socioeconomic status. There is no correlation between socioeconomic status and gingival status on dental and oral health of pregnant women. Suggestion: Midwives need to work together with dental health workers so that pregnant women can have their teeth checked after a pregnancy check in order to prevent dental disease during pregnancy.
