Abstract

The high prevalence of oral diseases in the Baduy tribe is due to a lack of knowledge about dental care practices and limited access to health services, especially in remote areas. The Baduy people are still bound to pikukuh (customary rules), which have been passed down from generation to generation. The meaning of pikukuh is that it never accepts new things from the outside. So, this is an obstacle to getting dental health education directly and not allowing the use of electronic media. Education using the storytelling method with the media of pictorial pop-up books as an alternative. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of using pop-up books with storytelling methods in improving dental health knowledge in children aged 6–12 years in the Baduy community. The research design used was a pre-experimental study with a pre-test and post-test design. Samples were taken using pursposive sampling technique with inclusion criteria, involving 24 respondents. Data was collected through a questionnaire containing 10 question thet were filled out before anf after the education session. The results of the Wilcoxon statistical test showed a significant increase in knowledge, with an average pre-test score of 65.42 and a post-test score of 95.42 (p-value = 0.000). In addition, analysis based on gender showed no significant difference in knowledge improvement (p-value > 0.05). The conclusion of this study is that pop-up books with storytelling methods are effective in improving dental and oral health knowledge in children in the Baduy community.
