THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN NUTRITIONAL STATUS AND PERIODONTAL TISSUE INFLAMMATION IN ELDERLY

Abstract

Nutrition has a relationship with oral health issues, especially periodontitis in elderly. A good nutritional intake is very important for maintaining gingival health and periodontondal tissue. One of the most common chronic inflmmatory disease worldwide is periodontitis. Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease that affect the periodontal tissue that supporting teeth. it is caused by specific microorganisms and damages the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone progressively. This study aims to determine and analyze the relationship between nutritional status and periodontal tissue inflammation in the elderly.. Quantitative approach with an analytical correlation research design using a cross-sectional method through examination and observation is used in this study. The respondents in this study consisted of 35 elderly individuals who are members of the Posyandu Lansia Sekar Arum RW 05, RT 22 Desa Gadung, Kec. Driyorejo, Kab. Gresik. Purpisove ampling are used in this study as data collection technique. Spearman’s Rho is used in this study to data analysis. The results of this study indicate that the average nutritional status of the elderly falls into the overweight category, accounting for 60% of respondents. Additionally, 85.7% of the elderly were found to have periodontitis. The Spearman’s Rho correlation test resulted in a value of 0.339, indicating no significant relationship between nutritional status and periodontal tissue inflammation in the elderly.
