Dental and oral health problems in Indonesia are still high, in this case dental caries and periodontal tissue disease. This disease occurs because of plaque that sticks to the surface of the teeth. The contents of plaque consist of microorganisms in the form of biofilm. This biofilm can affect the structure of the oral cavity. Controlling plaque accumulation can be done by gargling with boiled water. The mechanical effect of gargling can clean plaque on the surface of the teeth. Salan leaves (Syzgium polyanthum) and guava leaves (Psidium guajava Linn) have chemical effects, because they contain flavonoid compounds which can inhibit plaque growth. The aim of this research was to analyze the effectiveness of gargling boiled bay leaves (syzygium polyanthum) and guava leaves (psidium guajava linn) on reducing plaque index in students of the Department of Dental Health, Health Polytechnic, Ministry of Health, Manado. This type of research is quasi-experimental research with a pre-test and post-test design. This research was carried out by providing treatment to respondents and checking the plaque index before and after gargling with a decoction of bay leaves (syzygium polyanthum) and guava leaves (psidium guajava linn). The sample in this study amounted to 50 people. The data were analyzed using the t-test. Based on the results of the t-test, it was found that ? value=0.00 (0.00<0.05) meaning that there was a significant difference between before and after gargling with boiled bay leaves (syzygium polyanthum) and guava leaves (psidium guajava linn ). The results of this study also showed that there was a difference in the plaque index value after gargling with decoction of bay leaves (syzygium polyanthum) and guava leaves (psidium guajava linn), where the average value before gargling decoction of bay leaves was 2.7 and after 1 and had The difference in decrease was 1.7 points, while the average value before gargling with boiled guava leaves was 2.6 and after 1.1 and had a difference in decrease of 1.5 points. This shows that gargling with boiled guava leaves is more effective in reducing plaque accumulation compared to boiled bay leaves.Downloads
