Abstract

Background : The World Health Organization (WHO) in 2022 stated that there would be 12,224,551 new cases of stroke every year in the world. Stroke is in third place in Indonesia with a total of 1,789,261 cases. Stroke patients often experience limitations in mobilizing. Difficulty maintaining oral and dental health due to cognitive and physical disorders can increase the risk of oral mucosal infections, tooth decay and worsen the disease suffered. All the daily life activities of stroke patients are assisted by their family members, such as nutritional needs and mobility needs, the personal hygiene needs, especially oral hygiene needs. Objective :The purpose of this study was to analyzing the influence of oral health care on the family's knowledge and the oral hygiene of stroke patients in the Ruby Ward of Dr. Slamet Regional General Hospital, Garut Regency. Method : The research design employed was a pre-experimental design with a one-group Pre-Test and Post-Test design. The sample was selected using purposive sampling, comprising a total of 48 stroke patients for the research. The research instruments consisted of a questionnaire and the assessment of the Simplified Oral Hygiene Index (OHI-S). Data analysis used the Wilcoxon test. Results: in Ruby Inpatient Room RSUD dr. Slamet, family knowledge of stroke patients after being given dental (p<0.001) and oral health care experienced an improvement and OHI-S stroke patient got better (p<0.001). Conclusion: There is an effect of dental and oral health care on family knowledge and oral hygiene of stroke patients.
